Conceptual Design
This is the first step of the design journey.
It’s where we translate your vision, ideas, and lifestyle needs into a creative and functional design direction, this generally happens as an in person or zoom meeting.
We explore big-picture ideas.
Instead of focusing on construction details, we start by thinking about overall layout, shape, space, flow, light, and how your building will feel and function.
We look at how your site can best be used.
Whether it’s a sloped block, a small lot, or a view you want to capture — we assess orientation, access, natural light, breeze, and surroundings to inform the design.
You’ll see sketches and early plans.
These may be hand-drawn or digital diagrams that give a clear sense of what the project might look like — from floor plans to 3D massing models (simple shapes that represent building form).
We test multiple options.
Sometimes there’s more than one way to solve a design problem. We show you the possibilities and help you weigh them up.
It’s a collaborative phase.
We’ll work closely with you to refine the design vision — your feedback is essential. This is where dreams start to take shape.
Outcomes typically include:

Town Planning (if required)
If your project is in a heritage area, character zone, or outside typical planning rules, we’ll guide you through the council process:
- We identify whether a Development Application (DA) is needed.
- We prepare the required drawings, reports, and supporting documents.
- We liaise with town planners and council to make the process as smooth as possible.
This ensures the concept meets both your goals and any local planning requirements from the outset.
Architectural Planning
This is where ideas start turning into buildable plans.
After confirming the concept design, we begin developing it into something more detailed, accurate, and aligned with your budget, timeline, and approval requirements.
We refine the layout and design.
This includes adjusting room sizes, wall placements, ceiling heights, and circulation — making sure everything flows well and functions beautifully.
We consider materials, construction methods, and systems.
At this stage, we explore material selections, how the building will be built, and early integration of services like lighting, ventilation, and sustainability features.
We prepare documentation for consultants and approvals.
We create the architectural drawings and information needed for engineers, surveyors, and other consultants to begin their work.
We align the design with regulations.
We check compliance with building codes, zoning rules, and other requirements to avoid issues down the track.

Plans become more detailed, and we may produce updated 3D visuals, elevations, and sections so you can better understand the design from all angles.

I’m Alessia, a Gold Coast based architect and designer with over ten years of experience, specialising in refined, sustainable residential design. I’ve worked at leading design practices including Bates Smart and HGA Studio across residential, commercial, and educational projects.
Before my career in architecture, I lived in Africa as a wildlife artist, developing a deep appreciation for nature & place. I later moved to Tuscany, where I discovered a lasting love for timeless design & craftsmanship.
Today, I draw on these experiences to create homes that balance beauty, sustainability, and a true sense of belonging.
Studio Valenza practices upon Bundjalung Country and recognises the Ngandowal and Minyungbal speaking people as Traditional Owners and custodians of the Land.
